Working with an Intern (Let us Dispel The Intern Myth)
Let’s address the elephant in the room: when people hear “intern,” they sometimes picture someone fumbling through their first day on the job. That’s not what’s happening here. coeo’s Clinical Interns are Master’s-level therapists who have already completed years of rigorous academic training in evidence-based modalities like CBT, DBT, EMDR, and trauma-informed care. They are highly trained clinicians in the final stretch of becoming fully licensed therapists, gaining real-world experience under expert supervision. Here’s what makes them exceptional:
No waitlist.
Clients seeking lower-fee therapy can start working immediately with one of coeo’s clinical interns. Our interns are completing graduate-level training through partnerships with respected universities such as Villanova University, Thomas Jefferson University, Kutztown University, and others.
They’re invested.
Interns are building their careers and reputations. They show up with energy, intention, and a genuine drive to make a difference. Many clients tell us their intern therapist feels more present and engaged than therapists they’ve worked with before.
They’re supervised by the best.
Every intern at coeo is closely supervised by Kristen Czech, LMFT, a certified Clinical Supervisor with over two decades of experience in trauma, EMDR, and relational therapy. That means your therapist has direct access to expert guidance on your case. It’s like having two therapists for the price of one: the insight and attentiveness of someone early in their career, backed by the seasoned wisdom of a veteran clinician.
They’re trained in what works.
Our interns aren’t just winging it. They are enrolled in advanced master’s or doctoral programs in social work, marriage and family therapy, and professional counseling. Each intern completes a rigorous interview and onboarding process before beginning to see clients. Our interns work with individuals, couples, and families, and are trained in evidence-based modalities proven to help with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and life transitions. They know their stuff, and they’re learning how to apply it in real time with real people.
They’re current.
Our interns are immersed in the latest research, therapeutic techniques, and clinical best practices. They bring fresh insights and up-to-date training that can sometimes get lost in the routine.
Intern therapists bring current knowledge and strong theoretical training, while their supervisor offers the kind of clinical intuition that only comes from years in the field. You get both. For many clients, working with an intern offers a balance of high-quality care, approachability, and affordability that makes therapy sustainable long-term.
Why Choose an Intern Over a Fully Licensed Therapist?
Honestly? Sometimes interns are the better choice. Here’s why:
• Affordability without compromise. You’re getting the same quality of care at a fraction of the cost. That means you can afford to come consistently, which is what actually makes therapy work.
• More availability. Fully licensed therapists often have waitlists that stretch for months. Our interns have openings now.
• Supervision = built-in quality control. Your intern isn’t working solo. They’re consulting with a seasoned supervisor on your case, which means you benefit from multiple clinical perspectives.
• They have time for you. Interns often carry smaller caseloads, which means more energy and attention for each client.
• Plus, you are supporting a therapist building their career, and helping us keep mental health care accessible to all.
Payment Options
We understand that financial circumstances vary, and we never want cost to be the reason someone can’t access therapy. Rather than requiring proof of income or complicated paperwork, our model is built on trust and accessibility. Sessions with our interns range from $30–$110, based on what you can sustainably afford. Payment can be made using cash (if in person), credit, or HSA/FSA cards.
How to Choose Your Rate
Therapy works best when it’s consistent. Consider what you can realistically sustain week after week, without creating financial stress or feeling pressured to pause your care. Ask yourself: “What amount can I commit to weekly or biweekly that supports both my healing and my financial stability?” Your choice is respected and honored—no documentation or justification needed.
A helpful starting point: set your session fee at about 1% of your annual income. So if you earn $40,000 a year, that’s $40 per session. From there, adjust based on what actually feels doable for your life right now.
Our Promise
Whether you work with a clinical intern or a seasoned therapist, you receive the same level of care, commitment, and support. Healing should never depend on your financial situation. It should depend on your willingness to begin.
